How do we make healthy eating choices at camp when we have those scrumptious chocolate chip cookies eyeing us from the baked goods shelf? Or that cooler filled with iced cold soda beckoning to us? How about that crispy fried chicken that whispers to us from the hot line? And bacon? Did someone say omelette? Start small. Staying on track with healthy eating at camp can be difficult. Temptations are many. The accessibility to large quantities and the variety of foods available can make living a healthy lifestyle challenging. However, with some will power, camp life can support a healthy lifestyle (if you let it). There are just as many nutritionally beneficial food items available as there are unhealthy options. It really comes down to the individual’s choices. Learn about the meals by engaging in conversation with the Chef. Ask how the items have been prepared. Smart choices start with whole foods. Avoid processed dishes, as they are high in sodium, sugar, and fat. Whenever possible, food should be prepared using fresh ingredients rather than prefabricated processed foods. Remember that eating smart and limiting your consumption of sugar, salt and high fat foods, will make your life much more pleasant. You will have more energy, sleep better, and be in a happier frame of mind. Camp can be tough, but making the right decisions about what you eat can make it significantly easier. Try some of these tips to stay healthy at camp:
- Instead of grabbing that soda, grab a water.
- Instead of bacon and eggs, try whole grain hot cereal with fruit and yogurt.
- Instead of those fries, what about that fresh, crisp garden salad?
- Chocolate chip cookie….well, maybe just one instead of seven.
